The Detroit story
Terrence Dixon is a Detroit techno producer and DJ who has released records under his own name and as Population One since the 1990s. His sound is spare and hypnotic: minimal, looping grooves built largely on a Roland MC-303 groovebox, a modest machine he turned into a signature instrument. His tracks appeared on Berlin's Tresor, the label that did most to bring Detroit techno to Europe, and on Juan Atkins's Metroplex, as well as on a number of smaller European imprints. Dixon keeps a very low profile and has said he is “not into interviews”; he explains that his music comes from his surroundings and personal life in Detroit, and he cites Teddy Pendergrass, the O'Jays, Mantronix and Jimi Hendrix among his biggest influences, a mix of Philadelphia soul, electro-funk and rock that echoes in his rhythms. In 2014 he announced his retirement from making music, but he has continued to release new work since.
