The Detroit story
Syd Howe bounced among struggling clubs in Ottawa, Philadelphia, Toronto and St. Louis before the St. Louis Eagles sold him to the Red Wings in February 1935. In Detroit his career finally took off. Playing mostly at left wing and center, he was part of the teams that won the franchise's first Stanley Cups in 1936 and 1937, and he was on the ice for the famous game of March 25, 1936, when Mud Bruneteau ended the longest match in NHL history in the sixth overtime at the Montreal Forum. He won a third Cup in 1943. On February 3, 1944, at the Olympia, he scored six goals against the New York Rangers, a modern-era NHL record that still stands as a club mark. When he retired in 1946 he was the league's career scoring leader. He is not related to Gordie Howe.
