The Detroit story
Battier grew up in Birmingham, in Detroit's northern suburbs, and became a standout at Detroit Country Day School in nearby Beverly Hills, where he won a Michigan Mr. Basketball-type honor and led the school to three straight state Class B championships. He graduated with a near-perfect grade point average before going on to Duke University, an NBA career with several teams, and two NBA titles with Miami. His Detroit roots stayed with him after basketball: in 2010 he and his wife founded the Battier Take Charge Foundation, which funds scholarships and mentoring for underserved youth, including programs in his hometown region.
