The Detroit story
Payne was born in Detroit, the younger sister of singer Freda Payne, graduated from Central High School in 1961 and earned a science degree at Michigan State University in 1966; she taught school before turning to music. Her first group, the Glass House, signed in 1969 with Invictus Records, the Detroit label that Holland–Dozier–Holland founded after leaving Motown, and she sang lead on their records. In 1973 she replaced Jean Terrell as lead singer of the Supremes alongside Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong, later Susaye Greene, singing on "He's My Man" and the disco-era club hits "I'm Gonna Let My Heart Do the Walking" and "Let Yourself Go" until the group disbanded in 1977. She later recorded with Greene as Scherrie & Susaye and, from 1986, performed with the Former Ladies of the Supremes.
