The Detroit story
Gupta was born in Novi, a western suburb of Detroit, to immigrants from India who had met in Livonia while working as engineers for the Ford Motor Company; his mother was among the first women engineers at Ford. He and his brother graduated from Novi High School, and he then went through an accelerated program at the University of Michigan, earning his medical degree in 1993 and finishing his neurosurgery residency there in 2000. Since joining CNN he has become America's best-known television doctor, reporting from war zones and disasters and leading coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic, while continuing to operate at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and teach at Emory University.
