The Detroit story
Gagner, already a well-traveled veteran of stops in Edmonton, Arizona, Philadelphia, Columbus and Vancouver, was traded to Detroit at the 2020 NHL trade deadline in exchange for Andreas Athanasiou and a prospect. His first season in Detroit was cut short after just six games by the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, but he stayed on, signing two separate one-year contract extensions and settling in as a reliable depth forward for a Red Wings team working through a rebuild. After three seasons in Detroit he left as a free agent for Winnipeg in 2022, before later returning to Edmonton for a third stint with the club that drafted him.
