The Detroit story
Ackoff was born in Philadelphia in 1919, studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and, after Army service in World War II, earned a doctorate in the philosophy of science there under C. West Churchman. From 1947 to 1951 he taught philosophy and mathematics at Wayne State University in Detroit as an assistant professor, his first academic post, before moving with Churchman to the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland, where they built one of the first graduate programs in operations research. He spent most of his career at the Wharton School, arguing that organizations should be treated as purposeful systems and redesigned as wholes rather than fixed part by part. His books include Redesigning the Future (1974) and Creating the Corporate Future (1981).
