The Detroit story
Tomjanovich was born and raised in Hamtramck, the small, densely packed city entirely surrounded by Detroit, before starring at the University of Michigan from 1967 to 1970, where he still holds the school's career rebounding record and had his No. 45 retired. His entire professional career, first as a player and later as head coach, was built with the Houston Rockets, whom he led to consecutive NBA championships in 1994 and 1995 and later coached to Olympic gold with Team USA in 2000. Though his fame came far from Michigan, Tomjanovich has remained closely tied to his home state, and in 2021 became the first University of Michigan basketball player elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
