The Detroit story
Royce da 5'9" was born Ryan Montgomery in Detroit and moved to suburban Oak Park at ten; he picked up the name “Royce” in high school from a pendant resembling the Rolls-Royce logo. He began rapping at 18, drawing on national stars and on Detroit's own Esham and Detroit's Most Wanted. His manager introduced him to Eminem on December 29, 1997, and a year later the two formed the duo Bad Meets Evil. His debut solo album, finally self-released in 2002 after label disputes, was titled Rock City in honor of Detroit's Motown heritage. A bitter feud with Eminem's group D12 followed, including a 2003 fight between entourages outside a Detroit nightclub, but the rift later healed: Bad Meets Evil's 2011 EP Hell: The Sequel debuted at No. 1. He also co-founded Slaughterhouse and PRhyme, and The Allegory (2020) earned his first Grammy nomination.
