The Detroit story
Renée Elise Goldsberry was born in San Jose, California, and grew up in both Houston and the Detroit area. She finished high school at Cranbrook Kingswood, the private school on the Cranbrook campus in Bloomfield Hills, known for its Eliel Saarinen architecture and strong arts tradition. From there she went to Carnegie Mellon University, graduating in theater in 1993. In New York she built a stage career step by step: Nettie in the original Broadway cast of The Color Purple, the last Mimi in the original run of Rent, and Shakespeare at the Public Theater. Her breakthrough came in 2015 as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, which earned her a Tony Award and a share of the cast album's Grammy. On screen she has appeared in One Life to Live, The Good Wife, Girls5eva and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
