The Detroit story
Craig grew up in Detroit and ran track first as a hurdler at Detroit Central High School before developing into a sprinter at the University of Michigan, where he won back-to-back IC4A 220-yard titles in 1910 and 1911. At the 1912 Stockholm Olympics he won the 100 meters in a final delayed by seven false starts, then beat the same field again in the 200 meters, completing a rare sprint double. He retired from competition immediately afterward. Decades later, at 59, he returned to the Olympics as an alternate on the U.S. sailing team and carried the American flag at the opening ceremony of the 1948 London Games. He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2010.
