The Detroit story
Born David Glenn in Detroit, Pop Winans was raised by his mother, a singer at Zion Congregational Church of God in Christ, and grew up in Detroit's Mack Avenue Church of God in Christ, where his paternal grandfather, Isaiah Winans, was pastor. At 18 he sang with the Detroit soul group the Nobelaires, played saxophone and clarinet, and in 1950 joined the Lucille Lemon Gospel Chorus, where he met pianist Delores Ransom; they married and raised ten children. To support the family he worked as a car salesman, taxi driver, barber and janitor, and on the assembly line at a Dodge plant in Detroit in the 1960s. He began preaching in Detroit churches in 1969. When his sons were discovered as the Winans, he became their manager, and with Delores he recorded Mom & Pop Winans (1989), which earned a Grammy nomination; his solo album Uncensored was nominated in 2000.
