The Detroit story
Phillip Peaks grew up on the east side of Detroit, where a friend shortened his first name into Peezy. A fan of Jay-Z, Dipset, DMX and Jadakiss, he started rapping in 2004 as a freshman at Cooley High School after writing a song about being suspended, but left school after 11th grade and spent his late teens, as he puts it, just trying to survive. By 2010 he and a circle of friends were regulars at the Cloud 9 studio; with Babyface Ray and others they released “Eastside Where the Real Money At”, a track that spread through Twitter and made Team Eastside one of the defining crews of Detroit's modern street rap. His mixtapes and albums, several released through Empire, feature collaborators such as Icewear Vezzo and Babyface Ray, and he helped younger artists including Veeze. In December 2025 he and Vezzo became House of Dank's first franchise partners, opening a cannabis store on Gratiot Avenue in the area where both grew up.
