The Detroit story
Paul Henderson chose the Red Wings organization as a junior because their affiliate, the Hamilton Red Wings, was closest to his Ontario home, and he scored the goal that sent Hamilton to its first Memorial Cup final in 1962, which the club then won. Called up to Detroit late that season, he made the NHL full-time in early 1964 and helped the Red Wings reach the Stanley Cup Finals that spring and again in 1966, though Detroit lost both times. After a salary dispute in 1966, the Red Wings dealt him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in March 1968 in one of the era's biggest trades, sending Frank Mahovlich to Detroit in return. Henderson became a Canadian icon four years later with Team Canada, scoring the series-winning goal in each of the final three games of the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union — a moment voted Canada's sports moment of the century.
