The Detroit story
Coffey came to Detroit in a 1993 trade after a brief stop with the Kings, reuniting with coach Scotty Bowman from their championship years in Edmonton. In the lockout-shortened 1994–95 season he led the Red Wings in scoring and won his third career Norris Trophy as the league's best defenceman, then led all blueliners in postseason scoring as Detroit reached the 1995 Stanley Cup Final, where the Red Wings were swept by New Jersey. The next year Coffey helped Detroit to a franchise-record 62 wins and a second straight Presidents' Trophy. A falling-out with Bowman sent him to Hartford in 1996 as part of the trade that brought Brendan Shanahan to Detroit. He remains one of only two NHL defencemen to record multiple 100-point seasons.
