The Detroit story
Paul Carey grew up in Mount Pleasant, studied at Central Michigan and Michigan State, and joined the announcing staff of Detroit's WJR in June 1956. He stayed at the station until his retirement in January 1992. For WJR he produced the Tigers radio network from 1964 to 1971 and then became Ernie Harwell's partner in the booth, a pairing that lasted until both were pushed out after the 1991 season. His rich, deep voice also carried Lions pre- and postgame shows, six seasons of Detroit Pistons play-by-play, and a statewide high school scoreboard program he created. Carey called his last Tigers game at Tiger Stadium in 1991. He was elected to the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and in 2012 received the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association's Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award.
