The Detroit story
At 14, Kane moved to Detroit to play for the elite Honeybaked youth club, living with former NHL player Pat Verbeek, whom he still credits as a mentor, and later attended Detroit Country Day School before joining the U.S. National Team Development Program, also based in Michigan. He went on to a legendary career in Chicago, winning three Stanley Cups, a Conn Smythe Trophy and the rare Hart-and-Art-Ross double in 2015–16 as the first American-born player to do so. In November 2023, as a free agent, Kane called Detroit one of his preferred destinations and signed with the Red Wings, saying the city 'was always there' for him. He has re-signed with Detroit each summer since, and general manager Steve Yzerman has praised his calm skill under pressure in the years since his return.
