The Detroit story
Ullman turned professional with the Red Wings in 1955 after junior and senior hockey in Edmonton, and he spent his rookie season on Detroit's fourth line. Within a few years he was one of the most dependable two-way centers in the league, a smooth skater and superb forechecker who rarely drew attention to himself, often playing in the shadow of Gordie Howe at the Olympia. In 1964–1965 he led the NHL with 42 goals and finished second in scoring. He reached the Stanley Cup Final with Detroit in 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1966, though the Red Wings lost each time. In March 1968 he was the centerpiece of a blockbuster trade that sent him, Paul Henderson and Floyd Smith to Toronto for Frank Mahovlich and others. He finished his career with more than 1,200 points in the NHL and entered the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1982.
