The Detroit story
Cash reached Detroit in April 1960 in one of the most lopsided trades in Tigers history: Cleveland sent him over for Steve Demeter, who played only a handful of games afterward. In 1961 he had a season for the ages, leading the American League with a .361 average, and on June 11 of that year he became the first Tiger to clear the right-field roof at Tiger Stadium, a feat he repeated several times. A left-handed power hitter known as "Stormin' Norman" for his clubhouse humor, he hit 373 home runs for Detroit, tied with Miguel Cabrera for second in franchise history behind Al Kaline. He was the everyday first baseman of the 1968 World Series champions. After retiring in 1974 he stayed in Michigan, played pro softball for the Detroit Caesars and worked in broadcasting. He drowned off Beaver Island in 1986.
