The Detroit story
York was born in Waterford, Michigan, and came up through the Detroit area's competitive youth hockey scene, playing for the Detroit Little Caesars program as an eleven-year-old and later for the Detroit Compuware Ambassadors, where he scored 136 goals in the 1993–94 season. He attended Lutheran High School Northwest in Rochester Hills before moving to Ontario for junior hockey, a path that led to a standout four-year career at Michigan State University. He went on to a lengthy professional career, including NHL seasons, before finishing as a player and eventually captain of the Iserlohn Roosters in Germany's top league, where he later returned to Michigan State to complete his college degree.
