The Detroit story
Detroit traded for Cabrera before the 2008 season and signed him to what was then the largest contract in franchise history, betting on a young star who had already helped Florida win a World Series. He rewarded the move quickly, and by 2011 was a perennial batting champion, but 2012 was the signature season: he led the American League in average, home runs and runs batted in, becoming the first Triple Crown winner in forty-five years and winning the AL MVP award, a feat he repeated in 2013. He helped carry Detroit to the 2012 World Series and multiple postseasons through the mid-2010s, playing every home game at Comerica Park, and remained a Tiger to the end of his career in 2023, cementing his place as the greatest hitter in franchise history.
