The Detroit story
Porter was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1947. His link to the Detroit region is his birth; his education and career unfolded elsewhere. He studied mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton and then earned an MBA and a doctorate in business economics at Harvard, where he joined the Business School faculty. His book Competitive Strategy (1980) set out the five forces framework for analyzing the competition in an industry, still a staple of business courses. The Competitive Advantage of Nations (1990) popularized the idea that regions prosper through clusters of related firms. He also co-founded the consulting firms Monitor Group, now part of Deloitte, and FSG.
