01 / The Detroit story

The Detroit story

Kinsley was born in Detroit, the son of a physician, and grew up in the Detroit area, attending the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills before going on to Harvard, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and Harvard Law School. He became one of the sharpest political writers of his generation: editor of The New Republic, where his 'TRB' column set the tone for a generation of liberal commentary; the liberal co-host of CNN's debate show Crossfire; and in 1996 the founding editor of Slate, one of the first successful online magazines. He later edited the opinion pages of the Los Angeles Times and wrote widely about living with Parkinson's disease.
