The Detroit story
Abbott was born in Detroit and grew up in the lakeside suburb of Grosse Pointe before studying at the University of Michigan and earning a doctorate in literature in New York. She began with stylish noirs set in mid-century America, winning the Edgar Award for Queenpin (2007), then turned to the hidden lives of teenage girls and women in books such as The Fever, Dare Me and Give Me Your Hand, many set in anonymous Midwestern suburbs that echo the one she knew. She also writes for television, co-creating the series adaptation of Dare Me and writing for HBO's The Deuce.
