The Detroit story
Schneider, already a Stanley Cup champion from his time with the Montreal Canadiens, was traded to Detroit from the Los Angeles Kings at the 2003 trade deadline as the Red Wings tried to bolster their run for another title, though Detroit was upset in the first round that spring by Anaheim. He re-signed with the Red Wings that off-season and played three more seasons in Detroit, recording a career-high 21 goals and 59 points in 2005–06. After leaving Detroit for Anaheim, he missed being part of the Red Wings' 2008 Stanley Cup championship by one season. Schneider later became a leader in the NHL Players' Association, working alongside former Red Wings teammate Brendan Shanahan on player-safety rules, and he returned to Detroit in 2013 to play in a Red Wings alumni game at Comerica Park.
