The Detroit story
Howe was born in Detroit while his father Gordie starred for the Red Wings, and he grew up around the team, playing youth hockey with the Detroit Roostertail club and leading the Detroit Junior Red Wings to a national championship at age 15. His long professional career took him first through the World Hockey Association and then the NHL, mostly with the Hartford Whalers and Philadelphia Flyers, where he became one of the finest two-way defensemen of the 1980s. He returned to his hometown club for the 1994–95 season, playing eighteen games as the Red Wings reached the Stanley Cup Final. After retiring as a player, Howe stayed with the Red Wings organization for decades, first as a video coach and then as a professional scout, earning further Stanley Cup rings in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008 before retiring from the club in 2021. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
