The Detroit story
Detroit drafted Dionne second overall in 1971, and he made the Red Wings' roster immediately despite a self-described poor training camp. His 77 points as a rookie set a league record for a first-year player, and by his second season he was a key part of the team's power play and penalty kill. He was named team captain for the 1974–75 season, in which he scored 47 goals and 74 assists, but growing friction with team management, including a public trade request he later denied making, led him to sign with the Los Angeles Kings as a free agent in 1975. In Los Angeles and later New York he became one of the highest-scoring players in NHL history, finishing with 731 career goals and more than 1,000 assists, but his four seasons in Detroit launched the career that led to his 1992 induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
