The Detroit story
One of the four Staal brothers to reach the NHL, Marc Staal spent thirteen seasons with the New York Rangers before Detroit acquired him in September 2020 in exchange for future considerations. He signed a one-year extension with the Red Wings in July 2021 and played two seasons on Detroit's blue line as the team continued rebuilding. Staal left as a free agent for the Florida Panthers in 2022, closing out his playing career after seventeen NHL seasons and later moving into player development with the Rangers organization.
