The Detroit story
Detroit signed Italian forward Luigi Datome, known as "Gigi," to a two-year contract in July 2013. He played a reserve role for the Pistons over parts of two seasons, and in January 2015 was briefly assigned to the team's NBA Development League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Drive, before being recalled a week later. After leaving Detroit he returned to Europe, where he became one of Italy's top players, later earning an All-EuroLeague Second Team selection in 2016.
