The Detroit story
St. Louis was born in Detroit in 1942 and made his career in New York's musical theater as a vocal and dance arranger and music director. He worked on the Broadway shows Soon (1971) and the Andrews Sisters' musical Over Here! (1974), and composed the musical Truckload (1975). For the 1978 film of Grease he was the creative music consultant and adapter, co-wrote the new ballad Sandy with Scott Simon, sung by John Travolta, which reached number two in the United Kingdom, and himself performed Rock 'n' Roll Party Queen and Mooning with Cindy Bullens on the soundtrack. He then composed the score of Grease 2 (1982). He later composed, arranged and conducted for the Leiber and Stoller revue Smokey Joe's Cafe (1995), arranged a 2008 production of Jesus Christ Superstar and appeared as the piano man in the film Ironweed. He died at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey, in 2021.
