The Detroit story
One of 11 children in a family that had moved from Alabama to Detroit, Lois Reeves grew up singing in the choir of the Detroit church where her grandfather, Rev. Elijah Reeves, was minister. After high school she traveled with her sister Martha's group, learned every song and routine from the wings, and in 1967, barely 18, replaced Betty Kelly in what was now Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. She also handled the group's books, travel and contracts. She sang on "Honey Chile", "Love Bug Leave My Heart Alone" and the final album Black Magic (1972), and helped with choreography. Afterward she sang backup for Al Green in Quiet Elegance, a group originally organized by the Temptations' Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin. She later ran a nightspot in Detroit and has toured again with Martha and their sister Delphine. She has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the group.
