The Detroit story
Boivin had already built a reputation as one of the NHL's toughest hitting defensemen over parts of two decades with Toronto and Boston when a five-player trade brought him to Detroit in February 1966. He later recalled general manager Hap Emms asking if he would go to Detroit, and how much he enjoyed finally playing alongside opponents he had spent years hitting, such as Gordie Howe and Alex Delvecchio. That spring he helped the Red Wings reach the 1966 Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens. He played one more season in Detroit before, at 35, extending his career with one of the six new franchises added in the 1967 NHL expansion.
