The Detroit story
Born in Königsberg and raised in East Germany on jazz from Radio Luxembourg, Magdalene Arndt emigrated in 1959 and lived with relatives in Detroit while studying geography at Wayne State University. In 1964 she met poet John Sinclair, and with fourteen others they founded the Detroit Artists Workshop that November; the next year they married at the First Unitarian Church on Cass Avenue. She photographed John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk in Detroit, formed a light-show company with Gary Grimshaw for the Grande Ballroom, and helped organize the 1967 Love-In on Belle Isle. After police raids and the 1967 uprising, the Trans-Love Energies commune moved to Ann Arbor with the MC5, whose image her pictures largely created. She co-founded the White Panther Party in 1968. After years in New Orleans she returned to Detroit in the 1990s; MOCAD gave her photographs a museum retrospective in 2021.
