The Detroit story
Lamont Dozier was born in Detroit and began singing in the city's doo-wop groups, including the Romeos in 1957 and the Voice Masters around 1959. He recorded for Anna Records, the Detroit label run by Berry Gordy's sisters, under the name La Mont Anthony, before joining Motown. In 1962 he teamed up with brothers Brian and Eddie Holland at Hitsville U.S.A., and Holland–Dozier–Holland became the engine of the Motown sound, writing and producing hits such as “Heat Wave”, “Where Did Our Love Go”, “Baby Love”, “Stop! In the Name of Love”, “I Can't Help Myself” and “Reach Out I'll Be There”. In 1968 the trio left Motown in a dispute over royalties and founded their own Detroit labels, Invictus and Hot Wax, scoring hits for Freda Payne, Chairmen of the Board and Honey Cone. Dozier later had a solo career and, decades on, won a Grammy for “Two Hearts” with Phil Collins.
