The Detroit story
Kyle Hall grew up on Detroit's west side, with family roots around Joy Road, in a household steeped in music: his great-uncle was the Detroit jazz pianist Sir Roland Hanna, his aunts include jazz singer Naima Shambouger and violinist Tia Imani Hanna, and his mother is a vocalist. Record shops, older DJs and family record collections, he has said, shaped everything he makes. He began producing as a teenager and was hailed as a wunderkind of Detroit techno, releasing rough, swinging, machine-driven house on his own label, Wild Oats, which also launched younger Detroiters such as Jay Daniel with the Karmatic Equations EP (2014). His debut album The Boat Party (2013) was followed by From Joy (2015), a triple 12-inch built from teenage recordings made at his father's home near Joy Road and hailed by Metro Times as one of the year's best releases. He plays Detroit's Movement and Charivari festivals and clubs such as TV Lounge.
