The Detroit story
Connor was born in Clinton Township, a Detroit suburb in Macomb County, and grew up playing in the area's well-known Belle Tire youth hockey program before starring for the University of Michigan Wolverines. As a freshman in 2015–16 he set a modern-era Michigan scoring pace, reaching 20 goals faster than any Wolverine since 2007–08 and posting the best freshman points-per-game average since 1979–80, before leaving school early to sign with the Winnipeg Jets, who had drafted him 17th overall in 2015. He has spent his entire NHL career with Winnipeg rather than a Detroit franchise, but his roots in the area's youth hockey system and at Michigan remain part of his story, and he represented the United States internationally while still a Wolverine.
