The Detroit story
Kwame Brown had already carried the weight of being the first-ever high-school player picked first overall in an NBA draft, in 2001, when Detroit signed him to a two-year contract in July 2008. He played the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons as a rotation forward-center for the Pistons during a rebuilding stretch after the team's run of conference-finals appearances had ended. Detroit did not retain him afterward, and Brown moved on to Charlotte, Golden State and Philadelphia before retiring in the mid-2010s.
