The Detroit story
Traded from Edmonton to Detroit during the 1995–96 season for defenseman Dan McGillis, Maltby became a defining piece of the "Grind Line" alongside Kris Draper, the checking unit that helped anchor four Red Wings championship teams: 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008. On February 27, 2009, he played his 1,000th career game, a milestone reached in a Detroit win over the Los Angeles Kings at Joe Louis Arena. He retired after the 2009–10 season and immediately moved into scouting for the organization, a role he still holds. Maltby has made his home in Grosse Pointe, splitting the year between Michigan and his native Ontario, keeping close ties to the metro Detroit community long after his playing days ended.
