The Detroit story
Keith Tucker was born in Detroit and started out with his friend Tommy Hamilton covering Juan Atkins's 1980s electro tracks; they built a local following by pairing breakdancing crews with Tucker's DJ sets while playing fast synthesized bass lines live. His first EP, on the Frequency label in 1990, was a collaboration with Atkins and Jesse Anderson. With Hamilton he co-founded Aux 88, the east-side group that became the flagship of Detroit's second electro wave on the 430 West and Direct Beat labels, with records such as “Direct Drive” and the album Bass Magnetic (1993). Tucker's style mixes syncopated, minimal electro with Miami-bass rhythms built on the Roland TR-808, and his lyrics revolve around technology, science fiction and space travel; he cites 1970s funk, Kraftwerk and Bach as inspirations. He left Aux 88 in 1996 and co-founded Puzzlebox Records with Anthony Shakir, releasing the EP Lifeform (1997); later, as K-1 and Optic Nerve, he collaborated with Dopplereffekt and DJ Godfather.
