The Detroit story
Markgraf was born in Bloomfield Hills and attended Detroit Country Day School, where she helped the soccer team win a state championship in 1991, scoring 16 goals with 26 assists that season. She went on to play college soccer before a 12-year career with the U.S. women's national team, starting 97 percent of her 201 appearances. She won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics and gold in 2004 and 2008, and was part of the team that won the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. After retiring she moved into broadcasting and, later, front-office work, eventually serving as general manager of the U.S. women's national team. She was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2023.
