The Detroit story
Detroit took Verlander with the second overall pick in the 2004 draft, and he reached the majors the following year, winning American League Rookie of the Year in 2006 and helping the Tigers to the World Series that fall. He threw the first no-hitter at Comerica Park in 2007 and a second in 2011, the same season he won the pitching Triple Crown and became the first starting pitcher since Roger Clemens to be named league MVP. Verlander led Detroit to four straight AL Central titles from 2011 to 2014 and two American League pennants, in 2006 and 2012, establishing himself as the franchise's dominant starter of his era. The Tigers traded him to Houston at the 2017 deadline, and he went on to two more World Series titles and a third Cy Young Award elsewhere, but his 12 years in Detroit built the foundation of a career now considered among the greatest in baseball history.
