The Detroit story
Meram was born in Shelby Charter Township, in Macomb County, to parents who had immigrated from Iraq and met in the Detroit area. He attended Eisenhower High School in Michigan and played local club soccer before a college career that took him to Yavapai College in Arizona and then the University of Michigan. After turning professional and building a career in Major League Soccer, including a memorable extra-time goal for the Columbus Crew in the U.S. Open Cup, he represented Iraq internationally, helping the national team reach the Asian Cup quarterfinals. In April 2024 he came home to play for the Michigan Stars, a lower-division club based in the Detroit area.
