The Detroit story
Joseph William Tobin was born in Detroit on May 3, 1952, the eldest of 13 children, and was baptized at Most Holy Redeemer Church, the parish in Southwest Detroit run by the Redemptorist order. He joined the Redemptorists himself and was ordained a priest in 1978. The next year he came home to Holy Redeemer as associate pastor, working especially with the neighborhood's growing Hispanic community and with young people, and from 1984 to 1990 he led the parish as pastor. During those years he also served the Archdiocese of Detroit as an episcopal vicar and at its marriage tribunal. His career then turned international: he led the worldwide Redemptorist order from 1997 to 2009 and served at the Vatican before becoming Archbishop of Indianapolis in 2012. Pope Francis made him a cardinal in 2016, and he has been Archbishop of Newark since 2017.
