The Detroit story
Bernier, who had already won the Stanley Cup as a backup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012, signed a three-year, $9 million contract with the Red Wings on July 1, 2018. In Detroit he served as backup to longtime starter Jimmy Howard, helping steady a Red Wings team in a rebuilding period. In November 2019 he became the first Red Wings goaltender in 40 years to record two assists in a single game, a small but memorable piece of franchise trivia. After three seasons in Detroit, the Red Wings traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes in July 2021 as he became a free agent.
