The Detroit story
After stints with Toronto and Winnipeg, Gustavsson signed a two-year contract with Detroit in July 2012 as insurance behind the Red Wings' starting goaltender. He had a memorable hot streak that winter, going 3-0-0 with a stingy 1.67 goals-against average and a .953 save percentage in a string of victories that helped push Detroit to first place in its division. He re-signed with the team in 2014 and stayed through the 2014–15 season, at one point sent down to the Grand Rapids Griffins on a conditioning assignment. Off the ice, Gustavsson made his home outside Detroit with his wife, Emelie Witt, whom he married in the Detroit area in March 2013.
