The Detroit story
John Michael Quinn was born in Detroit in 1945, the youngest of three children, and went through the city's Catholic schools, attending St. Anthony High School and then Sacred Heart Major Seminary, where he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy. He later received master's degrees in religious studies and systematic theology from the University of Detroit Mercy. Bishop Walter Schoenherr ordained him for the Archdiocese of Detroit on March 17, 1972, at St. Raymond's Church in Detroit. He served as an associate pastor in Farmington and Harper Woods and then as pastor of St. Luke's Parish in Detroit, while also working in the archdiocese's Catholic education offices. In 2003 Pope John Paul II named him an auxiliary bishop of Detroit, and on August 12 of that year Cardinal Adam Maida ordained him a bishop at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. In 2008 he became coadjutor and soon bishop of Winona, Minnesota, a diocese renamed Winona–Rochester in 2018. He retired in 2022.
