Maxwell was born in 1947 in Garden City, a working-class suburb in western Wayne County, and moved with his family to Ohio as a child, so his Detroit-area tie is one of birth. The son of a minister, he followed his father into the pulpit, leading congregations in Indiana, Ohio and California, including Skyline Wesleyan Church near San Diego. From the 1990s he turned to writing and teaching about leadership, and books such as The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership and Developing the Leader Within You sold millions of copies and made him one of the most prominent voices in the business-leadership market.
