The Detroit story
Joe Casey joined guitarist Greg Ahee and drummer Alex Leonard, who had been playing as a duo, and with bassist Scott Davidson they became Protomartyr in 2010. Casey, older than his bandmates and without a background as a performer, became known for his deadpan baritone, suit-and-overcoat stage presence and dense, darkly funny lyrics steeped in Detroit's decline, Catholic imagery and history. Critics compared his voice to Ian Curtis, Mark E. Smith and Nick Cave, and the band's sound joined British post-punk to Detroit's garage-rock grit. After the debut No Passion All Technique (2012) on a small Detroit label, Under Color of Official Right (2014) and The Agent Intellect (2015) won wide critical praise; Relatives in Descent (2017), Ultimate Success Today (2020) and Formal Growth in the Desert (2023) followed on Domino. Their seventh album, Hotel Usona, recorded in New York with Dave Fridmann, is released on September 25, 2026.
