The Detroit story
Šlégr's stay in Detroit was brief but perfectly timed: the Red Wings acquired him from Atlanta in March 2002 to add veteran depth on defense for a playoff run built around Steve Yzerman, Sergei Fedorov and newcomer Dominik Hasek. Weeks later he was hoisting the Stanley Cup with the team, the trophy that completed his career's Triple Gold Club status alongside a world championship and Olympic gold with the Czech national team. He moved on after that single championship season, later returning home to Czechia, where he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament in 2010 and was inducted into the Czech Ice Hockey Hall of Fame in 2019.
