The Detroit story
Drafted by Detroit in 2003, Howard spent years developing in the minors before finally winning the starting goaltender job in the middle of the 2009–10 season, when veteran Chris Osgood struggled. He went on to record more than 500 career games for Detroit, including a run of consecutive playoff appearances that stretched the franchise's postseason streak into its third decade, and he set a Red Wings shutout milestone against Philadelphia at Joe Louis Arena in 2016. His entire NHL career, from his first call-ups through the move to Little Caesars Arena, was spent in a Detroit uniform, and after retiring as a player he stayed with the organization as a studio analyst and later a goaltending coach for Detroit's professional women's hockey team.
